Old Bewick church

The interior of the apse at the tiny, gem-like Norman church at Old Bewick is painted with the blue and gold of the firmament; most churches in the medieval period would have had painted interiors like this. It is a very special place. The name means bee-farm, and bees are still brought here in summer to feast on the nectar of purple heather which grows on the moors to the east.
